Since
the inception of www.pbfd.com a little over a year ago,
we have heard numerous positive comments about the site.
There have been a number of changes and additions along
the way and we will continue to try to improve the site.
As in the beginning we want this to be a service to our
community and we are always open to comments and suggestions
as to how we can make the site useful to you. We sincerely
appreciate the support of the community and look forward
to continuing to serve you as a member of the community.
Recently I attended the National Fallen Firefighters
Memorial Service (www.firehero.org)
in Emmitsburg, MD. This year 114 firefighters that gave
their lives in service to
their own communities were honored. My wife and I had the distinct honor and
opportunity to escort a family from Georgia whose son lost his life last year
after conducting a full day of firefighter training at the Georgia State Fire
Academy. This 40 year old firefighter left behind his parents, two sisters, two
beautiful 4 year old twin daughters and a host of family and friends. It is indeed
tragic to watch those hundreds of family members as they remember their loved
one, yet, it is equally an honor to see the respect, love and support shown by
the fire service of this country that attend this service each year. The newly
released movie “Ladder49” (www.ladder49.com)
starring John Travolta tells a similar story to the ones lived by these families.
This is truly a realistic
and unique appraisal of what these families go through. I don’t condone
everything in the movie, but it is certainly worth seeing and will help anyone
better understand our work. The website above also has some good information
about the life of a firefighter as well as some important fire safety information.
As a Fire Chief, the last thing you ever want to do is have to inform a family
about a lost or injured firefighter. It is for this reason that we place so much
of our time and effort in training the guys in safety and readiness.
We thank you for your support and request your continued prayers and blessings
as we conduct the day to day operations of the fire department.
